The Diocesan Shrine of Mary

Our diocesan shrine dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Church and model of all Christians, began as a dream in 1973. With devotion from its earliest supporters and donations from all over the world, the shrine was constructed with the permission of Bishop John Jeremiah McRaith on the campus of Saint Joseph Parish. It was formally declared to be a “diocesan shrine” for the Diocese of Owensboro on May 7, 1989.

The shrine is noted for its nine stained glass or “art glass” windows, which depict some apparition of the Blessed Mother at various times in the history of the church. These windows commemorate Mary's role and presence at  Cana, Guadalupe, La Salette, Miraculous Medal, Tri-Millennium 2000, Legion of Mary, Lourdes, Fatima, and Tre Fontane.

The magnificent central window depicts the “Miracle of the Sun” event at Fatima in 1917 with the visionaries- Blessed Francesco, Jacinta, and Sister Lucy. The three side windows depict the Divine Mercy image of Jesus flanked by Saints Peter and Paul.

Various pilgrimages are made to the Shrine at different times throughout the year.

The Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the Shrine and at times masses, a public Rosary, and periodic Novenas are offered. Your intentions are always welcome.

The Shrine is open to everyone, including those not of the Catholic faith. Both group and individual pilgrimages to the Shrine are always welcome.

Youth 2000

The Diocesan Shrine of Mary sponsors several opportunities for growth in faith and to spread devotion to the Blessed Mother each year.

One of those events is the annual Diocesan Youth 2000 Eucharistic Retreat that the Marian Shrine Committee co-sponsors with the Diocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry. Youth 2000 is based on the 40-Hours Eucharistic Devotion.
